TOFA in partnership with Shecluded is changing the narrative
Traders of Africa (TOFA), is a Pan-African agro-commodities trading company enabling hundreds of local producers to trade home-grown and manufactured commodities to over 10 countries across 3 continents including Canada, India, China and Turkey. TOFA won the Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC) in Nigeria and represented Nigeria in the Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC) Global finals in Saudi Arabia in November 2019.
The company trades commodities worth over $6million annually, with women accounting for less than 1% of agricultural traders. Speaking with the CEO Uju , she said, women participate in agriculture predominantly as small-scale retail farmers and end users, but are missing in the commercial agro commodity space where they have the potential to earn more from trade.
Commodity trading within and outside Africa is a $50trillion+ business and there is a need for more women to participate for sustainable and inclusive growth of the sector.
Shecluded, in partnership with TOFA, are set to drive inclusion for women in the Agro-Trading space in Africa. In this partnership, these women-led companies will combine their resources to empower African women in the agricultural sector via TOFA’s Apprenticeship Scheme.
In the pilot cohort, 20 women will be selected to receive hands-on training from TOFA Academy on trade processes, including Agro products sourcing, product quality checks, payment methods and delivery to off-takers. All successful candidates will join the Shecluded network.
At the end of the training, 10 best performing beneficiaries will be selected to receive:
- Funding from Shecluded
- Monitoring and Mentorship from TOFA
- Direct offtake of all supplies by SourcePro
- Prompt payments so as to drive volumes
- Entry into the Biggest gainer competition
- Access to the TOFA network
To be selected to participate in this scheme, beneficiaries must posses;
- An interest in agro-commodity trading
- Basic knowledge of commodities and products in their local market
